July XI 2017

Christy Bronwyn JUL17 XI

Another month has gone by and that means another month of favourites.  Keep reading to see my July XI and it is a real bunch of randoms this month!

1. Skin Creamery Face and Body Lotion

This product is my go to moisturiser in winter and it made a comeback in my skincare routine at the beginning of the season.  It was a complete life-saver for me last year.  I use it mostly at night so that my skin really has a chance to absorb it and I find it works great under makeup during this time of the year.  The scent also makes me feel like I am having a spa treatment every night and who doesn’t want that?

2. LA Girl Shady Slim Eyebrow Pencil

This was a little impulse buy when I found myself wandering the makeup aisle at Dischem (local drugstore) as you do.  I have been keen to try the NYX microbrow pencil but there never seemed to be stock of a suitable shade for my brows when I looked at Clicks (the other drugstore). So when I happened on this product I thought I would give it a bash and loved it immediately.  I really enjoy the sharp and defined look that it provides. If I really want statement brows then I use this in combination with my Essence Make Me Brow gel and that really does the trick.

3. The 1975 T-shirt

In last month’s favourites post, I mentioned that The 1975 had pretty much dominated my playlist and they still kinda do. Now I love merch as much as the next person but availability is usually non-existent in this country, short of printing something yourself – which I was very close to doing.  Then I had a bit of a brain wave and remembered a shop called “Hot Topic” and that I had people in the States that love me enough to spoil me!  Cut to me receiving this beautiful t-shirt last month as an early birthday present.  Happy Christy indeed!

4. Real Techniques Buffing Brush

I had heard great things about this brush and it most definitely lives up to the hype.  I am always looking to expand my Real Techniques makeup brush collection and was lucky enough to be spoiled with “Core Collection” when my mum returned from a trip overseas. The one downside is that this brush is only available as part of the collection and cannot be purchased singly.  It blends foundation like a dream and I find my makeup lasts longer when I use this brush.  It is useful if you want light coverage but it can also build foundation to medium and full coverage.

5. Real Techniques Contour Brush

On that note another here is another winner from the Core Collection. It is labelled as a contour brush and it works great for that purpose but I use it for setting my under eye area.  Real Techniques does have a dedicated setting brush but I don’t own one of those yet and I am very happy with the performance of this brush.  It helps set my undereye concealer with a light layer of powder that stops the concealer from settling into fine lines.

6. Game of Thrones

There are no words to accurately describe how excited I was for the premiere of season 7.  Having to wait over a year for the new season to start was a testing experience and yes, maybe I am being a bit over dramatic but if you don’t understand where I’m coming from then, “You know nothing, Jon Snow.”… yeah, that happened.  Anyway, at the time of writing there are only three episodes left in the season (nine in the series!) and as this is a spoiler free zone all I will say is, “Wow!”.

7. MAPP10 Skin Repair Pills

I wish I had taken a before and after picture to show you how amazing these pills are.  Over the last few months I have been struggling with annoying breakouts and bought these on a whim.  These are a natural 10 day course of treatment and while I was skeptical in the beginning, they worked without me evening noticing they were working. About seven days in I noticed my skin texture had improved and the break out had healed.  When I had finished the 10 days, I started getting breakouts again so I started another round of treatment. You can take the 10 day treatment up to three months in a row but there is also a month long maintenance treatment as a follow up once your skin has cleared.  I shall keep you updated with the process! You can buy this at most major pharmacies in South Africa but if you are having problems on where to find it check out their website mapp.co.za

8. Anthropologie rings

These were also part of my spoils from the States.  I am very picky about jewellery and particularly about rings but I fell in love with these instantly.  They can be worn separately but I wear them stacked with the opal ring on top.

9. Neutrogena Water Gel

I first bought this along with the cleanser when the range was released last year and has been a part of my skincare routine since.  It is the perfect day time moisturiser for my combination skin as it provides hydration without making my skin greasy.  The formula of this moisturiser is very lightweight and is absorbed into the skin quickly.  Ideally I would prefer it to be in a tube as the pot is unhygienic but that’s not going to stop me from repurchasing this.

10. Natur Vital Silver Shampoo

This is every bottle blonde’s secret weapon! When I went back to blonde last year, the best advice my hairstylist gave me was to use purple shampoo every time I washed my hair.  Each time I go out after washing my hair I get asked by at least one person if I have just had my hair redone – that is not an over exaggeration, I promise.  This is the best purple shampoo variant that I have tried out as it incredibly pigmented which really helps with toning down the brassiness in the blonde

11. Don’t Matter Now – George Ezra

I have so been looking forward to hearing new music from Mr Ezra and he didn’t disappoint with the lead single from his new album.  It is the perfect song for a summer chill out playlist.  He is one of my favourite artists and I had the pleasure of seeing him live when he toured South Africa in 2015.  I still listen to his debut album “Wanted on Voyage” and if this track is anything to go on, then the second album is going to be just as great. Enjoy!

DIY “Wearable” Rainbow Highlight

It took a couple of months but I have adjusted to having some free time on weekends again (I’ll talk about that in another post) and this blog is in dire need of some of my undivided attention.   So I know I am way behind the times with this but it is an idea that has been sitting in my drafts for over six months and I finally decided I had procrastinated enough.  So here is my own take on a DIY Rainbow Highlighter. Birthday Wishlist 2016

My birthday is a month away and I love it! Mostly because I get to gather all my favourite people together in one place and have fun.  I’m not gonna lie, I like getting gifts too but most of the things that I want are on the expensive side.   I am that person that walks into a store and out of all the options I will always pick up the one that costs the most. What can I say, it’s not my fault I have certain tastes 😛

Anyway, I had a bit of fun dreaming of some things that I would like to receive at some point in life.  Some are a bit more realistic than others so here’s hoping!

Pastels&ProteasBirthdayWishlist.jpg

English Dawn Gardenia Perfume (Body Shop) – Every time I walk into The Body Shop I spritz a bit of this on and fall in love.  I have never been a huge fan of floral fragrances but this hits all the right notes.

Lush Golden Wonder Bath Ballistic (Christmas Collection) – This was the first thing I ever bought from Lush and I was so upset when I realised it wasn’t available throughout the year. Bonus tip: Anything from Lush is actually a winner for a birthday present 😉

Foreo Luna Mini – I want to up my game in my skincare routine and I think this will do the trick.  Definitely a pipe dream but that’s why this is a wishlist.

Skin Creamery Face Cleansing Powder – I love both the facial oil and cream from this brand so I have high hopes for this product.

Real Techniques brushes – I have slowly been adding these to my make up brush collection so the more the merrier!

Nike Tanjun Printed Grey – There is something about the cool grey and the print that speaks to me, hopefully one day they will be mine.

Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel  – This is a product that I have watched various Youtubers rave about for years. Ah, a girl can dream…

P.S. To my family and friends, please don’t take these as hints.  I was just having some fun, can’t wait to celebrate with you all!

Simple Beauty Tips

These tips might have been obvious to everyone else but these a few simple things that are a part of my beauty routine that work me. I have picked these up along the way through magazine articles, Youtube videos and sometimes were just trial and error.  So I decided to put them all down in black and white for other people to benefit from.

hair

Only conditioning the ends of your hair.  Through my teens and early twenties I defintely went through the oily phase and this wasn’t helped by liberally applying conditioner from root to tip.  Your roots get natural moisture as they grow out from your scalp. The lengths are the driest part of your hair because the longer your hair gets the less natural moisture it gets so this is where conditioner comes in.  If you apply from the mid shaft down then you can keep your hair looking healthy for longer.  Applying a conditioner to your roots can make them get oilier a lot quicker and weigh your hair down.  Obviously this depends on your type of hair but I think it is a good general rule to go by.  It is also good to note that nothing can bring dead hair back to life so regular visits to the hair dresser are a must!

Rinse conditioner out with cool water.  The cool water will seal the folicles in your hair which will lock in all the good stuff that you have just let sit in you hair for the past couple of minutes. I find it also gives my hair a little extra shine.  I won’t lie, this is a bit of a tough one to do in winter but it does work.

Leave your shampoo in for a minute or so.  This one was a somewhat new to my routine and it seems to be a bit of a game changer for me.  It is always recommended to leave your conditioner in for a few minutes but shampoo you lather and rinse straight away.  But if you think about it, if you want your shampoo to do what it says on the tin then you need to let the ingredients have some time to do their job.

If you have used lots of product in your hair, shampoo until the product lathers properly.  Have you noticed that sometimes you start working your shampoo through your hair and it doesn’t foam properly? Instead it has more watery consistency.  This is because the shampoo is breaking down the build up of product (mousse, hairspray, etc.) in your hair.  If you rinse your hair and reapply the shampoo, you will see that a stronger lather starts to build meaning that the shampoo is now cleaining your hair properly.

Use your shampoo for the effect you want to have on your roots and a conditioner to suit the length of your hair.  Am I the only one who would walk into Clicks and buy a shampoo and conditioner pair without thinking further?  When I actually thought about it,  I have always bought hydrating hair products and found my roots to be weighed down and a bit lifeless.  Then the penny dropped and realised that if I wanted lift at the roots then I need to be use a volumising formula.  I have thick-ish hair so I don’t need volume in the lengths of my hair so I stick to my shine boosting conditioners and I don’t think my hair has ever been happier!

Face.jpg

When cleansing your face, massage for about a minute. Giving your face a light massage helps improve your blood flow which assists in repairing imperfections and evening your skin tone.

Use a facial oil before your moisturiser. If you are apply the moisturiser first, the larger oil molecules can’t penetrate through to the skin and do the job you want it to do.

Don’t suck all the moisture out of oily skin.  If you have oily skin, don’t strip all the natural moisture from it with harsh products.  If you do this then your skin tends to produce more oil to compensate for this causing break outs and irritated skin.  Looking back this was probably a problem of mine during high school.  I have noticed that since I have started using more moisturing (not instense moisturising) creams and/or cleansers then I used to and my skin has calmed down a lot.  I do still get the occassionally break out but that can be attributed to bad eating or hormones.

Use sun protection. I stayed away from this for a long time as I always found sunscreens to be sticky or greasy.  Then I discovered the world of facial sunscreens and started using the Eucerin sunscreen for oily/combo skin and it works like a dream.  It is so important to protect your skin from the sun’s effects and if you find one that works for your skin then there is no excuse.

Makeup.jpg

Use a damp sponge and loose powder to set your under eye.  This trick was a revelation for me, I have some fine lines under my eyes and any concealer I have ever used has creased.  By using the damp sponge, it seems to melt the powder into the skin and the concealer doesn’t budge!

Use a tissue to remove the excess moisture from your foundation.  If I want my make up to last all day I apply my foundation, wait a minute or so and then use a single layer of tissue and blot my face.  This is also great if you have oily skin to help extend the life of your makeup.

Use a wet brush to get more intense colour payoff from your metallic or shimmery shadows.  This is a more commonly known one but I thought I would include it as it is useful.  When you want your eye look to have a bit more “wow factor”, using a wet brush will amp up the pigmentation of your metallic shades.  The shadows will have more of a vibrant sheen and that extra colour payoff is very satisfying.

I hope you found some useful tips that can help you improve your beauty routine!  What are your favourite beauty tips?

SAM_1836.JPG

I have no idea where the last couple of weeks have gone!  I have had every intention to use my free time to sit down and write some posts and somehow said free time just vanishes.  The last few days I have managed to get some kind of order back into this blog and have planned posts for the upcoming weeks.  There are a couple that are a bit different to what I have done before but I am excited to expand a little bit. Right, without further ado, let’s get into it!

This post is a follow on from my Drugstore Favourites – Face Products post that I did a few weeks ago so if you missed that definitely go check it out!

Empties #1

Empties Products #1.jpg

Some of my favourite posts or videos are “product empties” ones.  It just feels like you get a better review of the products because the person really gave them a good go in terms of use.  I won’t have many of these posts because it takes a while to get through things but it just so happens that I seemed to have finished a few products at them same time. Also, I usually buy the same product repeatedly because if I finish it, that usually means I like it. These posts will have a short review of each product that I used up as well as whether I will repurchase the product or not. Continue reading
